Marlin's year of manufacture for the 39A is determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number:
On Marlin-branded Model 60 rifles, the first two digits of the serial number indicate the year of manufacture. For example, if the serial number starts with 18. The 18 is significant, for subtracting it from 2000 gives the date of manufacture for the rifle, 1982. The serial # is S87X. The 29th Edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values doesn't give me any serial # references, just values in general. Without a manufacturing date, all I can do is guess. I did find one online Marlin search site and it indicated that all Marlin 39's with an S prefix were made in 1958 - 59.

Marlin Model 60 Serial Number Date Of Manufacture
Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].
Hope this helps
